Ballito Junction - R1.5b expansion

Category New Retail Centres

WBHO have commenced construction on the R1.5b expansion of Ballito Junction. The floor plate of the existing 9,542m2 centre is being increased to 68,000m2 with the rights for future expansion to 92,000m2. Due for completion in March 2017, the Ballito Junction will be the largest shopping mall and entertainment hub on the North Coast.

Pat Flanagan, of Flanagan & Gerard, says that the Ballito Junction expansion has become their most exciting and unique shopping centre project to date. They started showing an interest in the area some four years ago when they noted that the rapid residential growth in Ballito had exceeded all expectations. With the majority of their developments located to the north of South Africa, they were at first hesitant about breaking into the KZN market, but their thinking changed when market research indicated that local residents and holiday makers spend R300m to R450m annually at Durban shopping centres rather than in Ballito.

They are confident that the development phase as well as the completed mall will be responsible for significant micro and macro benefits to Ballito, including the creation of employment opportunities, both during the construction phase and on completion of the project. In working with the KwaDukuza Municipality they will be involved in the upgrade of the local road infrastructure as well as the recently approved Urban Improvement Precinct for Ballito.

The new “one of a kind mall” will be given a facelift using natural tones and textures, straight lines and natural light with :

  • 3 Shopping levels

  • 5 Parking levels

  • Grand 4.4m high shop fronts

  • Nu Metro cinema complex

  • Over 170 retailers and restaurants including :

  • Woolworths – 6,500m2

  • Edgars -6,000m2

  • Pick ‘n Pay

  • 75% of the mall is already let bringing 30 new brands to Ballito and offering one of the most unique shopping experiences in the country.

Flanagan & Gerard have been developing successful regional shopping malls since 2001 and are currently also working on the new Springs Mall (55,000m2), Menlyn Maine (24,000m2), Vaal Mall (67,000m2) and Thavhani Mall (50,000m2).
